DirecTV customers who subscribe to the XTRA package will be getting a free preview of the Ultimate Package April 30 – May 5.
The Ultimate package includes 225+ channels such as Encore, The Movie Channel, Sundance, Style, and NHL Network.

Just checked and we’re not getting those channels. Are you sure it starts on the April 30th?
Same here. I got an e-mail from DirecTV yesterday saying it was April 30 through May 5. Today I called them and nobody knew what the problem was. They had record of the promotion, but couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t getting the channels. The best they could tell me is that the engineers hadn’t turned them on yet. Somebody at DirecTV screwed up somewhere.
Same here. They have the promotion and they said it was a technical issue and engineers would hopefully get the channels up soon.
I usually will receive a message from them (through the tv), but didn’t get one this time. Still not working this morning (4:44 a.m.).
May 1 9:30 EDT and it still is not turned on. What’s up!
Same problem here. Thought it might be a good in the part of this site but Directv is listing it too. Very strange.
And me also. Yeah, the engineers screwed up.. SURE they did. It was probably that $6/hr. guy in customer service.
Its on for me but only a few that I see.
I channeled through and these were what came on:
535 – ENCeHD
538 – EWST
541 – EACTHD
554 – TMCeHD
558 – SUND
After sending them an email yesterday, I got an email back that they are working on the problem. However, at the dbstalk forum, they say that the preview is only for those who have the Choice Extra package. I have the grand-fathered in Total Choice package. Others at dbstalk who weren’t getting it had the Choice Extra Classic package. Just wondering what package those that aren’t getting it here on this forum, what package do you have. If that is the case, why would they target a free view to only those with a certain package?
I’m currently getting Encore channels and TMC but nothing else.
I’ve got about 20 channels that I didn’t have before. I noticed that the channels were free on Tuesday afternoon. There is not many things that are worth watching on the movie channels anyway though, it’s mostly older movies. I’ve only seen a couple movies worth watching. Its not worth paying for the channels we are getting in this free preview in my opinion. Hope this helps.
Art, very interesting. I also have the grandfathered total choice program and am not getting any of this preview on the east coast
I emailed them again today. Their response:
“Upon extensive review of the situation, I have confirmed that in order to receive the preview of the ULTIMATE package, you must have a base package of at least the XTRA package. Since you subscribe to an expired package TOTAL CHOICE, you will not be able to receive the free preview.”
Others at DBSTalk who have the Choice Extra Classic package say they are now getting the channels.
I spoke with Direct today about the free preview. If you have what they have called the grandfather package you will not be getting the free preview.
Sounds to me like they do not want to make money. Why would they only give the previews to certain people? In all fairness, it sounds sketchy to me…
Just another example of how poorly Directv treats their long term “grandfathered” customers. I don’t get their extended sports coverage of tennis or golf either.
