DirecTV customers who currently have HD access with DirecTV will be getting a free preview of the HD Extra Pack starting August 19 and ending August 23.
The DirecTV HD Extra Pack includes Crime & Investigation Network HD, HDNet Movies, Palladia, MGM HD, Smithsonian Channel HD and Universal HD. See below for the channel lineup.

275 – Crime & Investigation HD

I saw that this preview was supposed to start, but I never got a chance to view these channels. The preview never said you needed to have the HD equipment, and yet it just said that the preview was going to start
Raagan the first sentence of this post clearly states that the free preview is for DirecTV customers who currently have HD access.
Shame these channels aren’t included in the basic HD package which I’m paying for.
